Cody Miller is the swimmer on the far right!
I so loved all of this Twitter commentary, and more…
“One of my favorite moments so far in #rio2016…The JOY radiating from @swimiller was what these games are all about.” (Tweet from @emiliejjoanne)
“I need to have Cody Miller’s enthusiasm for all things in life! Congrats! #RioOlympics2016 #TeamUSA” (Tweet from @kristin_hurd)
“Nobody is happier about winning anything, Gold, Silver, than Cody Miller is about winning Bronze for 100m breaststroke. That’s real America.” (Tweet from @ucruben)
Also, how cool is this gif from NBC’s Twitter account? LOVE IT!
Twitter fans nationwide loved Cody Miller’s enthusiasm as much as I did! There are a lot of athletes that have stunned America with their truly amazing athleticism, but only a few who have been standouts in their CELEBRATION STYLE, AKA: ENTHUSIASM.
I hope if you watched you got a kick out of it as well. What fun it is to watch someone realize a life time dream after putting in the work.In Cody’s case, he had some health issues as a child, so overcoming those challenges is a big part of the story, but no doubt, he OWNED HIS MOMENT and I THINK WE ALL NEED to DO THAT.
Regardless if it’s a big project at work, a personal health goal you just achieved, a child who just got a grade they are proud of on their school homework… A first time soccer player getting their first goal… WE NEED TO OWN OUR MOMENTS WITH JOY!
My friend Teresa shared with me a story from Brene Brown, Ph.D., an incredible author (Daring Greatly, Rising Strong, others), that explains that most people do not allow themselves to experience FULL JOY for fear that for some reason it’s not real or true or that it perhaps isn’t their best yet. Dr. Brown shares a story of a man who she had interviewed (she’s a research professor in social work) who told her he never allowed himself to be too joyful about anything in life. His wife of 40 years died and after that she remembers him sharing: “The second I realized my wife was gone, the first thing I thought was, ‘I should have leaned harder into those moments of joy Because that did not protect me from what I feel right now.” She calls this phenomenon, “foreboding joy.”
I for one, hadn’t heard this term, but it resonated with me immediately. In fact, I’ve actually not been able to stop sharing this story because it seems to be widespread. I always have loved those people that put it all out there showing the world their pure happiness or joy, whether it’s a hard-earned beach vacation or showing off that new haircut that looks amazing. I know it would get a bit obnoxious if we all went crazy on this idea, but I for one need to allow myself to OWN THE MOMENT like Mr. Miller and LEAN IN TO MOMENTS OF JOY.
How about you?
