To Serve well

Serving with Excellence for a Life of Excellence

Grit

Short story of someone who gets it

January 14, 2016

blog_755408_2833309_1452747300Every once in a while, and unfortunately not more often, we all get what I call “CRAZY GOOD SERVICE.”  If you are at a high-end restaurant or hotel, you expect it…heck, you paid for it!  If you are however only doing a normally hum drum errand it is unexpected.

My goal this year is to take notice and do something about those experiences that make you simply think, “He/she gets it.”  Gets what? Get’s the fact that serving with excellence makes everything better! Below is a really short story of an experience I had that I thought was really cool:

Back in October I was at my son’s homecoming in Stillwater, Oklahoma. We stopped by Walgreens to pick up a few items he needed. We were in the back and the lady working at the cosmetics counter came out of her area to assist us (although we didn’t need or ask for help). We told her what we were looking for, and here’s where it gets kind of awesome. She went back to her station and apparently went looking for coupons for the product. When we walked by with what we came for, she flagged us over, gave us a coupon that saved us quite a bit of money, rang us up and engaged in a conversation which in the process gave us some eating recommendations for local “comfort” food. Here’s the thing:

1, It was evident that she was just doing this out of her normal routine. She wasn’t getting an incentive of some kind for being what I thought was above and beyond. (She was an approx. 65 year old and likely a grandma to some lucky grandkids!)

2.  I’m still amazed that she went out of her way to research coupons. Who does that? What a blessing for the customers she serves.

3. She demonstrated in what was likely less than 5 minutes that she cared. She was a true AMBASSADOR for Walgreens for her city.

Obviously, this story stuck with me- I did put it in my notes of possible future blog ideas, but after reviewing it again, I am again inspired. I hope you are too. How can you be a better ambassador?  I’m thinking right now I could be a better neighbor. Not sure how, but I know I don’t do much other than routine hellos. Think about it and I’m confident something will stand out!

3 reasons being loyal will improve your year

January 12, 2016

blog_754715_2832370_1452747244Loyalty! Why be loyal? It seems obvious in some categories, such as relationships.

As a friend, we really need our friends to be loyal and honor our story and support us no matter what happens. As an employer, we really cannot succeed at the top of our game without employee and customer loyalty.  =Starbucks thanks many of us for our loyal support, as do thousands of other businesses nationwide.  Why does it matter?

The statistics in the workplace are pretty astounding. According to the authors of Leading on the Edge of Chaos, the ability for businesses to keep their customers can increase profits 25-125%. WOW! The reliable 80/20 rule is also true in this category according to Gartner from Forbes.com – “80% of your company’s future revenue will come from just 20% of your existing customers.”

For employers, the cost of turnover is dramatic, but we won’t be delving in that category. The purpose of this post is to share not only what I believe to be true about loyalty, but to offer you some facts that may make a difference in your thinking and year! We need to be loyal to our role for own success and happiness. Here are three reasons why:

1. Full value: If we aren’t loyal, we don’t show up with our full value. I can’t imagine not showing up with full value. (Well actually, I had a temporary summer job one year doing something like making boxes…it was awful, and probably scarred me for life on tedious and boring jobs that appear to have no meaning.)  We must find a path that supports our values, passions and enables us to maximize our talents. Our world is counting on us to all come to the table with our full value.

2. Strong & better: When we are truly loyal, we become stronger and better employees, leaders, moms, dads, friends, volunteers, neighbors..I’m always game for getting stronger and better in any category.

3. Healthier: Finally, it’s January and most are focused on their health. Guess what? Scientists have documented that loyalty in relationships and in our career, offer benefits of reduced illness, longer life, higher compensation, more productivity and creativity. Even being loyal to our sports team, (GO KC CHIEFS!), helps reduce anxiety according to the Wall Street Journal! Who knew?

Who needs your loyalty?  Who needs their story honored by your support & loyalty? If you aren’t feeling loyalty to any of your key roles, stop and evaluate if it’s a good role or relationship and begin creating a game plan to up your game or get out!

Consider a comeback!

January 8, 2016

blog_753487_2830896_1452225236-1

Many consider Lincoln the greatest president in American history. He led the country through its greatest moral and military crisis, essentially saved the country from destruction and directed it toward restoration. Lincoln grew up in meager circumstances, failed at business twice and had what most would call a nervous breakdown. He lost when he ran for Congress, lost twice when he ran for the Senate and lost as a vice presidential candidate. Lincoln was then elected the 16th president of the United States, led the country to reconciliation and won re-election. (Information from the good ole’ Internet- word for word.)

Everyone loves a COMEBACK. Kansas City Royals fans are familiar with comebacks, as our team won the 2015 World Series after losing the 2014 Fall Classic in a heartbreaking game 7. This week, as we are on the topic of “considering” I thought I would share a personal comeback in hopes that it will resonate at some level. Here we go…

To be honest, my personal comeback probably doesn’t fit the dictionary definition of a “comeback,” but to me the word describes my story perfectly. So here it is… Nearly three years ago, I left my career of leading what is considered by many (and for sure me!) Kansas City’s premier medical practice. Leaving was so hard, but I felt called to join Humana, which is where I am today.  (I’d be happy to share offline the details of that with anyone who wants to hear it, but I won’t go into it here.) Just know that it was definitely a calling, or else I wouldn’t have considered leaving. The people I worked with and the mission we served was flat out amazing.

Since I felt that I was supposed to be in this new role, I had this crazy expectation that the experience was going to immediately be incredible. I was going to pop in and get to work, add value to the company and grow professionally. I was seriously shocked that it didn’t play out that way at first. It felt like I landed in an unfamiliar city, half-way around the world, without knowing the language, the landmarks, or really anything that I could understand, let alone contribute to. As you all probably know by now, it is really important for us all to feel that we are doing meaningful work, contributing at our highest level!

I struggled and learned, navigated new waters and created some new pathways. The experience was one I wasn’t familiar in my career, and one that I am not sure I want to experience again. At almost the two year mark (note: patience is not my greatest strength), the path finally became more clear. I had a new leader which was a key factor, but more importantly I was finally contributing and bringing value to the team and company at a level I was comfortable with. To me, this was a major comeback. I went from not knowing my way “around” or if I was even at the right place, to knowing exactly what I needed to do.

One important part of this story is that I stuck it out. I’m still sticking it out. When you know you are supposed to be somewhere, whether it’s a relationship, a career, a healthy living path, or anything else. It’s important to be obedient and stick with it, but most importantly, to make a comeback that helps you get to where you feel you are making a difference.

Comebacks are important. Do you have a comeback story? Maybe you are in the middle of one? It’s hard, but the humility factor grows, and that my friends, is a critical character quality to hone!

Considering our assignment

January 6, 2016

blog_752840_2829812_1452094414I love this idea of “considering” our assignment. I also love this idea of ‘we are young!’ What are we here for? To make it more practical, let’s focus on this year only. I don’t know about you, but I want to thrive in the key areas of my life. I did a little “mind map” exercise to launch the year, and my key categories were:

– Family
– Career
– Financial
– Health/Wellness
– Spiritual
– Travel
– Community

Thriving in our “assignment” takes a bit of considering. I took the next step to document a couple of key points under each of them. Considering is hard for some of these. Family seems easy, but then not so much. With the years going by and my friends starting to lose their parents, I’m confronted with how to make the most of the years. Meaningful is the key word. With my boys in college, planning family time isn’t really easy either. (The next weekend we will all be together is Thanksgiving next year…)

For my career it’s a bit easier, but when you are 47, you want to go “deeper” in your knowledge and contribution and that gets a bit tricky, aka more time to consider.

Finances are pretty straightforward, as is health and wellness (for God’s sake stopping eating pasta and pie and get to the gym and quit hitting snooze!).

Travel… Now that’s fun!

Community – What aligns with my believes? Worthy of my time? Global, local?

Okay, time for you to consider… Bold Goal… Bold visions my friends… If this year was to be your best yet, what would it look like?

Outdo one another in honor

December 22, 2015

blog_748479_2825585_1450709905HONOR! I love the very word, and I especially love that little life lesson tucked in the chapter of Romans in the old testament (12:10). No matter if you are a Christ follower or not, I have found the Bible to be the greatest leadership book of all time.

We were at our annual family adventure atPine Cove camps and this was the “theme” of the summer. How cool would it be if that little concept made its way into our homes and communities for 2016. What if everyone wrote that out, put it out there in their universe (on the fridge, on your 2016 goals list, on your computer, etc.)? I happen to think if we all elevated the idea of honor then our lives and world would see a dramatic turn for the positive!

Any takers?  I’M SOOO IN!

Energy for the holidays and beyond!

December 17, 2015

blog_746884_2824011_1450317433As promised, let’s spend a few minutes on the “other” side of energy. The nutrition side of this discussion for some is simply draining, because we all know what we need to do for the most part. So, while I include nutrition in the formula above, I’m going to save that one and focus on the sleep.

In case you didn’t know it already, sleep is the hot health topic for 2016. If you haven’t noticed, I promise you’ll now see the topic on magazine covers, and splashed on your social media channels.

For good reason, SLEEP according to Arianna Huffington, (publisher of the famous Huffington Post and author of the 2015 release THRIVE), is “the biggest enhancement tool” that we have in our personal arsenal for greater effectiveness. Look for her new book in April on the topic of SLEEP, and for now, take a look at her TED talk on the topic.

Locally, Dr. Michelle Robin is helping us move in the same direction with her 21-day rejuvenating sleep program. I think that sounds like a great idea if you currently are in the majority of depriving yourself of sleep!

I leave you today with some health benefits of sleep found on health.com! My hope is that you will make it a goal to improve your health in 2016 and watch your energy soar!
______________________________________________________________________________________________

  1. Sleep improves memory. During the sleep process you “strengthen” memories or “practice” skills learned while you were awake through a process called consolidation. (I’m all in on consolidation… who knew?)
  2. You’ll live longer and be less stressed. In a 2010 study of women ages 50-79, more deaths occurred in women who got less than five hours of sleep per night.
  3. Sleep curbs inflammation. Inflammation is linked to heart disease and a host of other diseases. Research indicates that those who receive six or fewer hours per sleep a night have higher blood levels of inflammatory proteins. Yikes!
  4. Sleep spurs creativity and sharpens your attention! Love that one!
  5. Sleep helps you achieve a healthy weight. Researchers in Chicago found that dieters who were well rested lost more fat (56%) of their weight loss than those sleep deprived.

3 ways to improve your energy at work!

December 15, 2015

blog_746118_2823153_1450144076

I love reindeer (otherwise known as caribou in case you need a game winning trivia question)! I have just now realized this – why it took 47 years I have no clue – they are just flat out cool!                __________________________________
So, how in the world do we get more energy? We have the obvious: Fueling our body with healthy foods, getting enough rest… We will hit some of those on Thursday, but for today, I am talking about energy at work (work being loosely defined, whether you are in the workplace, the community or home). Energy at work is defined by what activities that you work on that give you positive energy? What could you do all day? What activities make you feel at the end of the day fulfilled and if tired, a “good tired.” The goal of today’s blog is to encourage you to figure out what those are and play to them regularly! You’ll be better for it, I promise!

I wanted to figure this out in 2015, and so I found this really great Executive coach, Mike Miller, who works with Forte.  Their consulting firm focuses on a great tool called “Strengthscope” which is all about finding out what your top seven areas are that give you energy at work. After you take the assessment you get a great review that outlines the strengths that give you energy.

If you head over to their website you’ll find a few fun facts: People who use their strengths every day are …

  • 6X more likely to be engaged on the job
  • 3X more likely to be happier with their lives.  (I’LL TAKE THAT!)

Teams with leaders who take a “stength” based approach are…

  • 86% more effective than teams which don’t.

For those that know me, they won’t be surprised at my seven: collaboration, decisiveness, developing others, optimism, relationship building, self-confidence, self-improvement. So essentially, if I’m “playing” in areas that allow me to be doing these things, I am one happy camper. If I’m not on a consistent basis, I may be drained!  A key learning from my time with Mike this year, is that I can “over play” to these. For example, if I’m playing in the collaboration/relationship building space and the colleague I’m working with doesn’t have that in their top seven (or maybe even in their top 25 – haha) that I may be draining them, creating conflict. I need to shift to one of my other top seven deciveness for example, to work better with them, therefore giving me energy. Pretty interesting stuff!                          __________________________________________________________________________________________

So this is longer than my normal post, but worthwhile information! Here are the top three posted in the blog title to wrap it up! I encourage you all to find out in 2016 what gives you energy, and play to those! You will improve your “game” and your life! Top 3 ways to improve your energy at work:

  1. Find out what give you energy and play to those. Use Mike’s tool, or stengthfinders, or even make a list. If you don’t think you know, ask your closest colleagues at work, or friends… they will know!
  2. Get organized! Yep, sorry to the folks who may not like this one, but honestly, you have to have a gameplan and that includes making a list and reviewing and editing ofte. I do this at least one time a day and often twice a day. Priorities change quickly, at work and in life, and I have to ensure the top items stay at the top of the list, otherwise I’m drained of energy! You will gain energy only by achieving what you know you need to achieve.
  3. Make time for fun. I talk a lot about culture, and my friends, no matter if your leader is a culture builder or something more like a culture hit man (or woman) you can influence the culture in your area! Make a decision that you will be the difference within a reasonable radius around your area! Schedule time to walk around and be a culture guru wherever God has placed you! It will give you energy and those around you as well! DOUBLE BONUS!

Shifting expectations

December 8, 2015

blog_743615_2819356_1449543735Why didn’t I think of this? We certainly had three red cozy coupes! I used to think I was creative and then as the years go by I am often stunned at the ideas that we all get to enjoy! What fun. Needless to say this little guy made me smile and I hope he makes you smile too!

Today I wanted to touch on the idea of “shifting expectations.” As we consider living out a life of excellence, we have some options. We have the power to make a simple shift in the way we see a situation in order to move forward in a positive direction. The “I get to” blog last month touched on that very concept.

I wanted to point something out here… many people think of this decision as “settling”- slight shift, but a big difference. Settling has a negative connotation and makes us feel like we lost somehow. Instead we shift that thought and make a healthy decision for our sake and everyone around us to move on and as a result we move foward! That is excellence.

My hope is that for this week (let’s take it one day, one week at a time…) you will shift along with me as our expectations for the system might overwhelm us. In this moment, shift to a focus on joy. Not the hurry, the hustle nor the chaos, but on the beauty created in the moments that fill our lives.

Live it out!

November 29, 2015

blog_741023_2815089_1448765433

“And the greatest of these is love …” I COR 13:13

As we enter the holiday season with the hope of finding joy and peace, may we all remember that the greatest way to live out our lives is to show our love in big and small ways.

What is one big or small way you can show your love each day this week? Might as well kick off the season strong!

BOLD PRAYERS FOR YOU ALL!

Train your mind

November 10, 2015

blog_734618_2805536_1447168536Most every American knows Peyton Manning, Denver Broncos quarterback, NFL Super Bowl champion and MVP. To many, the best quarterback of all time.

Regardless of where he lies in the final stats, there is no doubt that he has demonstrated that training your mind is critical to great success. In fact, when he had potentially career-ending surgery in 2011, he did what many thought couldn’t happen and made a decision to seek the best training of his mind and physical body to step back into the game again. And he has done so with sheer greatness.

The first step in his decision: train your mind.

Most everyday we are hit with an array of challenges, decisions, problems, etc that have the potential to take us down. A simple action or reaction can send us reeling and quite often those are left whirling in our minds, often creating a life of their own. What if he meant that? Did that text she sent mean what I think it meant?

The National Science Foundation estimates that a human brain produces as many as 12,000 to 50,000 thoughts per day, depending on how deep a thinker a person is. Most of the so-called random daily thoughts are about our social environment and ourselves.

As you can see, with our brain on overdrive, we simply must train our minds to think positive and focus on the best of ourselves, our abilities, our intentions and of course, people.

One of the interesting things about the brain is that it is methodical. In my research, I read that a thought actually becomes a physical pathway in the brain. According to life coach Tim Brownson, the more you have a thought, the more you groove that path and the easier it is to have it again. That’s why having the thought “Why do I suck?” is never a great idea.

That’s where the training part comes in. I don’t want to overcomplicate this, but instead give you this to contemplate today. We are all champions in one way, shape or form. Peyton Manning just does it on a national stage. When troubles come our way, we have a choice to train our minds to go into what I’ll callexcellence mode.

What pathways have been etched into your mind due to constantly thinking or focusing on them? It could be a person in the workplace that has driven you to drink or at the very least you have hit your head against the wall so many times trying to navigate the situation. It could be a family member (Thanksgiving is a few weeks away in case you want to get prepared now…), that always seems to say the most life-draining things that leave you wondering where they came from or where you came from. It could simply be that you are really hard on yourself for pick your issue: over spending, not doing enough charity work, not working out enough, never picking up the phone and calling your best friend… You get the picture.

Let’s “groove” some new paths in our minds today and put our minds on excellence mode.
